Diamond Measurements Guide
Understanding Diamond Measurements
While carat weight is often the most discussed characteristic of a diamond, measurements play an equally important role in determining how large a diamond appears when viewed from above.
Two diamonds with identical carat weights can appear significantly different in size depending on their shape, proportions, and dimensions.
Understanding diamond measurements helps buyers compare shapes accurately and choose a diamond that delivers the visual appearance they desire.
What Are Diamond Measurements?
Diamond measurements refer to the physical dimensions of a diamond, typically expressed in millimeters (mm).
Depending on the shape, measurements may include:
• Length
• Width
• Depth
These dimensions provide a more accurate representation of a diamond's face-up size than carat weight alone.
Carat Weight vs Visual Size
Carat measures a diamond's weight, not its visible size.
A well-proportioned diamond may appear larger than another diamond of the same carat weight if its dimensions are optimized for face-up appearance.
For this reason, experienced buyers often evaluate both carat weight and measurements when selecting a diamond.
Round Brilliant Diamond Measurements
Round diamonds are measured by diameter.
Approximate measurements:
• 0.50 Carat → 5.1 mm
• 1.00 Carat → 6.4 mm
• 1.50 Carat → 7.4 mm
• 2.00 Carat → 8.1 mm
• 3.00 Carat → 9.3 mm
These values may vary slightly depending on proportions and cut quality.
Oval Diamond Measurements
Oval diamonds are measured by length and width.
Approximate measurements:
• 1.00 Carat → 7.7 × 5.7 mm
• 1.50 Carat → 8.8 × 6.5 mm
• 2.00 Carat → 9.8 × 7.2 mm
• 3.00 Carat → 11.5 × 8.0 mm
Their elongated shape often creates the illusion of a larger diamond.
Cushion Diamond Measurements
Approximate measurements:
• 1.00 Carat → 5.8 × 5.8 mm
• 1.50 Carat → 6.5 × 6.5 mm
• 2.00 Carat → 7.0 × 7.0 mm
• 3.00 Carat → 8.0 × 8.0 mm
Cushion diamonds can vary considerably depending on their length-to-width ratio.
Emerald Cut Measurements
Approximate measurements:
• 1.00 Carat → 7.0 × 5.0 mm
• 1.50 Carat → 8.0 × 5.8 mm
• 2.00 Carat → 8.8 × 6.4 mm
• 3.00 Carat → 10.2 × 7.2 mm
Emerald cuts often appear larger due to their expansive table and elongated shape.
Radiant Cut Measurements
Approximate measurements:
• 1.00 Carat → 6.5 × 5.2 mm
• 1.50 Carat → 7.5 × 5.8 mm
• 2.00 Carat → 8.2 × 6.3 mm
• 3.00 Carat → 9.5 × 7.0 mm
Radiant cuts combine brilliance with a larger face-up appearance.
Pear Diamond Measurements
Approximate measurements:
• 1.00 Carat → 8.0 × 5.3 mm
• 1.50 Carat → 9.0 × 6.0 mm
• 2.00 Carat → 10.0 × 6.5 mm
• 3.00 Carat → 12.0 × 7.5 mm
Pear diamonds offer an elegant elongated appearance and often look larger than their carat weight suggests.
Marquise Diamond Measurements
Approximate measurements:
• 1.00 Carat → 10.0 × 5.0 mm
• 1.50 Carat → 11.0 × 5.5 mm
• 2.00 Carat → 12.0 × 6.0 mm
• 3.00 Carat → 14.0 × 7.0 mm
Marquise diamonds provide one of the largest face-up appearances among all diamond shapes.
Why Measurements Matter
Measurements help buyers compare different diamond shapes objectively and understand how a diamond will appear when worn.
Two diamonds of identical carat weight may have very different visual sizes, making measurements an essential part of the buying process.
At Bespoke Carat, we provide detailed measurements for every diamond, helping clients confidently select the ideal size, shape, and proportions for their unique project.
